HOW
TO USE THE SCUFFTY
The
Scuffty has the virtue of simplicity. It requires no
elaborate setup. A practice carpet is provided, but
the Scuffty can be used on any reasonably smooth carpet.
The Scuffty practice carpet has been designed specifically
for practice with the Scuffty and has two ideal surfaces
for putting: one side simulates a slow green, the other
a fast green. Place the carpet on a level area of the
floor. Put the Scuffty at one end of the carpet, the
large radius facing the opposite end, taking care to
align the engraved line on top of the Scuffty with the
center line on the carpet and its face with the short
cross line at one end of the carpet. (See figure 1 to
right) Put the ball on the center line at the other
end and place the putter face on the cross line. Then
stroke the ball without looking at the target, just
watch the path of the putter blade. Concentrate on swinging
the club head back and forth on line. If properly stroked
the ball will return on line back to the putter. Always
hit the ball from a stationary position on the line.
Do this about thirty or more times in a row, with every
stroke on line, then turn the Scuffty around and putt
at the small end.
Putting
speed is practiced by letting the ball die at impact,
return to one of the markers on the center line, or
return with a certain velocity back to the putter.
Practice
can also be varied by moving the Scuffty off line (figure
2), putting from an angle (figure 3), hitting the ball
at the tangent point at the side so the ball returns
to the point of origin, (figure 4) or by turning the
carpet over for a different feel.
